FATTORIA POGGERINO
Chianti, Italy
Planted to approximately 12 hectares (29 acres) of vines, Poggerino’s wines are produced exclusively from its own grapes, and every step of the wine production and marketing is carried out by the owners themselves. The winery believes in an almost fanatical attention to vineyard work. It is in the vineyard that they strive to produce healthy grapes, which have attained the highest degree of concentration and ripeness possible, as this is key to the production of wines of style and character that can fully reflect the individuality of Poggerino’s terroir.
The wines produced from predominantly Sangiovese grapes combine a richness and concentration of fruit, acidity and tannin, indispensable to the wine’s longevity, while the soft, ripe nature of the tannins allows the wines to be enjoyed earlier than most of its counterparts.
Poggerino’s vineyards are located 400 to 500 meters above sea level, and face south-southwest. The soil is rocky, due to the breakup of the local “galestro” rock, which provides optimal drainage. These factors are all essential in the quest to produce great Sangiovese.
Tuscany’s only sparkling rose and aged on the lees for approximately 6 years to perfection. Creamy brioche mixed with cherries and raspberries on the nose gives way to subtle baking spices, stewed fruit and a weight that is balanced perfectly with the acidity. Age-worthy sparkling wine is hard to come by and this expression shows the craftsmanship of a top winemaker.
This Super Tuscan is a rarity, even for the innovative winemaking at Poggerino. A 50-50 split of Sangiovese and Merlot, this wine shows eloquence and depth. Soft red and dark fruits pervade, with hints of vanilla and baking spices on the nose break through along subtle leather and sanguine that develop in the glass and long after the each sip.
The wine is fresh, fruity with floral notes. Wonderful for the summer. While it is ready to drink immediately, it may be drunk over the next year or two. A wine that showcases the purity of fruit. Ideal for spicy food and fatty fish. This is a complex rosato.
With 12 months in larger barrels and an additional 8 months in bottle before release, this Chianti Classico is ready to go right out of the gate. It is a soft wine with supple tannins, purity of red berries and hints of balsamic and an earthiness that lends it well with a variety of meats and cheese.
Only the best grapes are used in this wine, which is then aged for 18 months in barrel and an additional 12 months in bottle before release. A beautiful classic example of Sangiovese and due to the elevation and winemaking, drinks great upon release. Leather, baking spices on the nose with hints of tomato leaf and red and dark fruits lead to a soft and long finish. V 96+

After the same fermentation as the regular classico, the new wine is racked to a cement egg of 6.5hl where malolactic fermentation takes place. After ageing for 12 months the wine is bottled. The wine is aged for a minimum of 8 months before sale. Bright ruby red colour. On the nose notes of earth, graphite, tobacco and hints of fruit. Extremely complex, sweet and persistent tannins.
